REUTERS/Brian Snyder/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 25 (Reuters) - IT software and consultancy services provider IBM (IBM.N) reported third-quarter revenue slightly above Wall Street targets on Wednesday, buoyed by stable demand for its software solutions and a stronger-than-expected mainframe business. Shares of the Armonk, New York-based company rose 2% in trading after the bell. While the company has seen a slowdown in the growth of its overall business compared to last year, it reiterated its annual target for revenue growth and free-cash-flow generation. Revenue at its software segment, which now includes newly acquired IT budgeting software maker Apptio, rose nearly 8%, excluding the impact from a strong dollar. IBM's revenue in the third quarter rose about 5% to $14.8 billion, compared to an estimate of $14.73 billion, according to LSEG data.

A black bear attacked a young boy outside his home in Bedford, N.Y., on Tuesday morning, but his parents were able to scare the animal away and save their son, officials said. By the time emergency workers arrived, the boy’s mother, a doctor, had bandaged him, said Carlos Cano, the chief of the Armonk Fire Department. Mr. Cano’s colleagues, who responded to the scene, told him that the bear appeared to have grabbed the boy, who he said was about 7. When officers arrived, the bear was still in the family’s yard, and they shot it. The North Castle, N.Y., police department said the animal had presented a danger to emergency and workers and residents.

Moderna and IBM are teaming up to use generative artificial intelligence and quantum computing to advance mRNA technology, the development at the core of the company's blockbuster Covid vaccine, the companies announced Thursday. The companies said they signed an agreement for Moderna to access IBM's quantum computing systems. IBM will also provide experts who can help Moderna scientists explore the use of quantum technologies, the companies added. Unlike traditional computers, which store information as either zeroes or ones, Quantum computing hinges on quantum physics. The companies said Moderna will use IBM's model to understand "the characteristics of potential mRNA medicines" and design a new class of vaccines and therapies.
IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna said the world is coming to believe that AI is a fundamentally transformative technology. ARMONK, N.Y.—International Business Machines Corp. researchers spent decades developing artificial intelligence when most of the world wasn’t ready to embrace it, and the company struggled at times to build a business around it. Now, as interest in AI booms amid new advances, IBM is tailoring the technology to address the individual business problems of customers that are prepared to use it. “I think we’ve all talked a lot about AI as a fundamentally transformative technology and I think maybe over the last few months, now, the world is coming to agree,” IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna said during an interview at company headquarters. “I think before that they might not have disagreed, but I’m not sure they fully believed.”
Democrats could have prevailed had their state party — which was busy deflecting progressive criticism of their conduct — marshaled better infrastructure and financial support for swing-district candidates. The icing on this rotten cake is that New York Democrats have no one to blame but themselves. Facing challenging new maps, Maloney and his moderate allies panicked that many of the popular progressives who had already announced their candidacies simply could not win. In a moment of exceptional self-unawareness that only underscored the broader myopia of establishment New York Democrats, Maloney took the news of his loss Tuesday as an opportunity to swipe at Ocasio-Cortez. Seth Wenig / AP fileBetween interparty bad blood and challenging electoral maps, the Democratic Party machine also appeared uninterested or unable to translate Democratic enthusiasm into meaningful on-the-ground organizing.
California-based tech giants dominate the list of companies where workers feel most satisfied with their pay, according to Comparably's sixth annual report based on employee reviews. 1, Adobe employees report being happy with their compensation across pay, benefits, bonus structures, equity and more. 4 Microsoft said that beginning July 1, it would nearly double its budget for employee salary increases and boost stock compensation to help workers cope with inflation. Top companies have also been able to persevere through a volatile stock market. "The biggest trend we see is that as the overall stock market has been affected, so too does people's perspective of their compensation," Nazar says.
